ESDM Ministry Reports 229 Million Tons of Coal Production by April 2026

Jakarta ,- The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded that coal production from January to April 2026 reached 229 million tons. Out of that total production, 84 million tons were allocated to meet the domestic market obligation (DMO), while the remaining 145 million tons were exported.

"(This realization) has indeed seen a decline compared to (the same period in) 2025," said the Director General of Minerals and Coal, Tri Winarno, during a hearing with Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Tuesday (5/19).

Tri did not specify the exact coal production volume for the same period last year. However, according to data from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, coal production reached 171 million tons in the period from January to March, or the first quarter of 2025.

He mentioned that due to this decline, the Ministry of ESDM will conduct a comprehensive evaluation regarding the production realization in the first quarter of 2026.

"Hopefully, the results of our evaluation can provide the best input for all parties moving forward," he said.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has slashed this year's coal production target to around 600 million tons. This was carried out through revisions to the work plan and budget (RKAB) of coal companies.

This policy aims to maintain favorable commodity prices. In 2025, the government approved a coal RKAB of 1.15 billion tons. Throughout last year, actual coal production reached 817 million tons. This amount was allocated for stocks (49 million tons), exports (522 million tons), and DMO (246 million tons).

Coal Supply for PLN

PT PLN (Persero) previously stated that the coal supply for power plant needs is secure and there is no potential for blackouts. PLN's Director of Generation Management, Rizal Calvary Marimbo, said that PLN and Independent Power Producers (IPP) have secured guaranteed coal supplies.

"The total volume of all (coal) supplied is around 84 million metric tons. This means it is sufficient until the end of this coming August," Rizal said when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Tuesday (3/3).

He explained that the supply was obtained from eight coal companies that were not affected by the RKAB cuts. These include state-owned enterprises (BUMN) and first-generation holders of Coal Mining Cooperation Contracts (PKP2B).

Rizal stated that overall, the total coal DMO allocated for PLN throughout 2026 amounts to 124 million tons. The remaining 40 million tons that have not yet been secured will be discussed further by the government.
