Jakarta,- The government recognizes that coal continues to play a vital role in ensuring national energy availability. As a dominant fossil energy source, coal has been the backbone of the national energy mix, supporting various industrial sectors and households across Indonesia.
Rita Susilawati, Secretary of the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), emphasized that coal remains a key energy resource.
"For this reason, we believe that energy strategies must continue to evolve in the future. The government is committed to ensuring energy security, promoting economic growth, and preserving the environment," she stated while attending The 3rd Sumatra Coal Outlook Conference & Digitalization in Mining Conference 2024 in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 7.
In her remarks, Rita discussed coal in Sumatra and its connection to Indonesia's energy strategy and economic development plans. She revealed that coal reserves in Sumatra account for about one-third of the nation's total coal reserves.
"Sumatra Island is one of Indonesia's main coal-producing regions, with reserves reaching approximately 11,866.66 million tons, or about 37.34% of Indonesia's total coal reserves," Rita explained.
However, Rita emphasized that the coal industry in Sumatra must adapt to align with national goals in transitioning towards a more sustainable energy future. By 2025, the government aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to at least 23%. This goal can be achieved by gradually reducing reliance on fossil fuels, including coal.
Furthermore, Rita affirmed that the government, through the Ministry of ESDM, is ready to support the coal industry and all stakeholders. "Ladies and gentlemen, we must work together to build a sustainable and prosperous future for Indonesia. The road ahead will not be easy, but collaboration, innovation, and shared commitment are necessary to achieve our national goals," she concluded.
The 3rd Sumatra Coal Outlook Conference & Digitalization in Mining Conference 2024, organized by Petromindo Group and CoalMetal Asia, brought together industry experts, stakeholders, and decision-makers to discuss the latest developments and challenges in Indonesia's coal sector.
